Craig Houghton

Born in Sydney in March 1956 and spent the first 18 years living in Newport on the northern beaches of Sydney.

Spent many days of my younger years at Newport Beach and progressed to surfing on boards when I was 11. Once started, with the beach at hand, surfing became a regular pastime and fun time which continues to this day either at my local break or on my travels.

I have been through the heavy old malibus to short boards and back again. I’m now riding a variety of board types and lengths.

Spent 39 working years as a teacher, the last 30 on the Central Coast of NSW where I have lived with my wife of 40 wonderful years and 2 children.

I am a life member of the Shelly Beach Malibu club where many lifelong friendships have been formed during its 20 year existence.

Now that retirement has begun and our children have left to raise their family or travel overseas my wife & I can freely travel when we want and I can spend many more hours enjoying surfing and socialising with my Retired Surfers Fraternity friends.

Nothing is more enjoyable than surfing with a few friends anywhere in the world and having fun out in the water.

Greg McConnell

Born in Sunshine/Melbourne in December 1953 but by the age of 3 we had moved to Sydney. I grew up in the Lane Cove area.

First real go at surfing was on holidays at Nambucca Heads I think in 1963 or 1964 and was on an old mal about 9’6″. Back in Sydney my mates and I were leaving our boards at Manly Store a Board, and travelled on the bus every weekend and stayed all day at the beach

I have been through the heavy old malibus to short boards and back again. I’m now riding a variety of board types and lengths.

When we started driving, we surfed the range of northern beaches and made many trips up and down the east coast. Seal Rocks area being a favourite spot. Having worked for myself for most of my time from building to whole-sale nursery to retailing in fruit and vegetable produce

I am now making up for lost water time. My darling wife and I do a lot of travelling in our motor-home that we love and trips overseas. Two happily married offspring and we are very proud grandparents of four (so far).

These days I am riding a range of boards from 7’4″ to 9′ to 9’4″ and a selection of pre ’68 mals.

Surfing most days with a bunch of great mates is an enjoyable way to spend our time, this is where the idea for Retired Surfers Fraternity was born.
